*In the annals of biggest sports betting wins, Mick’s is the undisputed champion.
Sports betting can get very entertaining if you are on a winning streak but if unluckily you have lost a substantial amount to a particular bet, it can get very frustrating. Today we would like to discuss the biggest challenges that player’s face while trying to beat the odds.
We all dream about the big win as we carefully select the odds, pick our team, place wagers, and watch with bated breath. As the final whistle blows, we fantasize that it also signals the win of a lifetime. Wouldn’t that be something?
For some lucky bettors, life-changing wins are more than just a dream. Let’s take a look at some of the most biggest wins in sports betting history.Grandpa Makes a Future Bet to Beat Them All
Soccer is the UK’s most popular sport by far, and when Harry Wilson was born, grandfather Peter Edward was sure the boy was destined for glory on the pitch.
So sure in fact that, in 2000 (when Harry was still a toddler), Mr. Edwards went to the bookmakers and placed a £50 bet (about $67) that the boy would play for Wales, his national team. The odds were a bit of a long shot at 2,500-1, but he was certain it would pay off.
Fast forward to October 15th, 2013, and 16-year-old Harry was sitting on the bench for Wales. In the 87th minute of the World Cup qualifier against Belgium, Harry was pulled in as a substitute for Hal Robson-Kanu.
Harry not only broke the record to become the youngest player to represent his country on the pitch, but he also made his grandfather a rich man. The 13-year-old bet won his grandfather a tidy sum of £150,000.A Fast and Furious Future Bet
In 1998 Richard Hopkins had a similar foresight when he was watching his son, Evan, race a young Lewis Hamilton at a go-karting track. Convinced the young Hamilton had a fast future ahead of him, Hopkins placed three separate bets on the rising racing star.
The first was a £200 ($270) bet that Hamilton would win the Formula 1 before he turned 23, and a further £100 bet that he would be World Champion by 25. Hopkins was so certain of his predictions, that he placed an additional third bet of £50 that Hamilton would achieve both.
Hamilton made Hopkins £40,000 richer when he won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2007 at the age of 22, and £50,000 richer when he clinched first spot in the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2008, at 24. This meant that Hopkins’ third bet bagged him an additional £75,000.All of Mayweather’s Sports Bets
The most notorious sports bettor today is boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. Renowned for his massive sports bets, he’s been known to reap hundreds of thousands (sometimes even millions of dollars) on single events. As the highest paid sports star of all time, he has plenty of spare cash to play with.
At the end of the 4th quarter, Mayweather collected a cool $1.4 million!
His biggest bet so far was in 2014, when he bet a whopping $815,000 on the Denver Broncos to beat the New York Jets by a 7.5 point spread. A touchdown by the Broncos put them up by 14, clear of the necessary points. At the end of the 4th quarter, Mayweather collected a cool $1.4 million! The Legend That Is Billy Walters
No list of extremes in sports betting would be complete without mentioning Billy Walters. Before Billy Walters was given his 5-year prison sentence and a $10 million fine for insider trading, Billy was the most notorious sports bettor of all time. His big bets were so feared by the sportsbooks that he was actually banned from wagering.
One of his most impressive bets was on the 2010 Super Bowl, when he put down $3.5million on New Orleans Saints to beat the Indianapolis Colts. The Saints were the underdogs going into the game with the Colts looking unbeatable, but Billy’s stats and figures all pointed to the Saints as the favorites. He went with it, and it paid off. No one knows how much Walter raked in exactly, but we’re pretty sure it was a hefty sum!Charles Barkley’s Super Bowl Win
Taking his seat in the sport betting hall of fame is the NBA legend turned sports announcer, Charles Barkley. While he’s best-known for his betting losses (reportedly totaling almost $30 million), it was his big win after the Super Bowl 36 that caused quite a stir.
By wagering half a million on the underdog New England Patriots to beat St. Louis Rams, plus a further $50,000 on the moneyline, Barkley won both bets.
The controversy arose from the small fact that Barkley didn’t have enough credit at the Mandalay Bay sportsbook to cover the bet, and hadn’t signed a marker. Of course, the sportsbook were reluctant to pay out, but eventually gave in and Barkley banked his $800,000 win.Win Some, Lose Some
Of course, even the sharpest bettors with the biggest bankrolls don’t come close to winning every bet. Bwin football betting. Take a quick peek at the biggest losses in in sports betting history and you’ll see what we mean.

We’ve all seen it, the smug Facebook post, or the retweeted betting slip with a huge profit from a tiny stake.
Usually it’s “just” a few hundred dollars, but there have some truly incredible bets down the years, and we’ve ranked top 5 biggest sports betting wins of all time. 5. Harry Wilson’s Grandfather
When Peter Edwards looked down at his grandson, the infant Harry Wilson, he didn’t just see the latest addition to the family, he saw a future Welsh international footballer (there is probably a joke about dribbling in there somewhere).
So sure was he of this babies footballing potential that he strode down to his local bookmakers and demanded what the odds were for his grandson to play for his country. A presumably surprised bookies gave him 2500/1.
On the 15th of October 2013, aged 16, he was brought on to replace Hal Robson-Kanu, making him the youngest player to ever represent Wales. His grandfather claimed the winnings of his 16 year old bet, £125,000 (267,000 AUS dollars), and earned himself one of the biggest sports betting wins ever.4. Xabi Alonso’s own half goal
Winning $50,000 from a $430 stake is crazy enough, but when the punter was inspired to place it because of a dream the story gets so much better.
In July 2005 Adrian Hayward had a very specific dream, in which then-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso would score a goal… from inside his own half. Inspired by this he headed down to PaddyPower to place his bet.
Six months later, midway through the season, Liverpool faced Luton Town in the FA Cup, and of course Xabi Alonso scored from his own half. PaddyPower were refreshingly honest about their huge loss, stating, “When he placed the bet we thought it was the easiest £200 we had ever made”.
Guess this is the time to say that sometimes, dreams really do come true…3. Saratoga Superfecta
A superfecta, for the unaware, is picking the first four horses to come in, not too hard, right? They also have to be in the correct order… Unsurprisingly the odds are usually pretty high, and makes this next bet even more impressive.
On a sunny August day in Saratoga Springs (USA) a very strange quartet of horses claimed the top four spots, for context the winner was an 88/1 outsider.
Just two unnamed punters correctly predicted the outcome, their winnings? 76,000 US dollars (just over 100,000 in AUS dollars), their stake? 10 US cents.2. Darren Yates and Frankie Dettori
Frankie Dettori is probably the only jockey who is a household name. The highly decorated rider has over 500 career wins, including his famous day at Ascot, where he won all seven races.
It wasn’t just Frankie who won that day, down on his luck carpenter Darren Yates decided, against the advice of his wife Anne, to place the sizable sum of £60 (130 AUS dollars) on Dettori to win all seven races, with odds of 25,000/1.
Darren, seemingly indifferent to the outcome of the race, went out with some mates to play football while Frankie went off and won him £550,000 (just over a million AUS dollars).
Although Darren’s team lost 4-0, he presumably took comfort in having one of the biggest sports betting wins of all time.1. Mick Gibbs
At the start of 2001 Mick Gibbs was a roofer living in Staffordshire, UK, on May the 24th he was a million AUS dollars richer, not bad for a stake of just 65 cents… How did he do it you ask? On paper it sounds almost simple, choosing 15 winners from a selection of European football matches. The odds for his 15-fold were a devilish 1,666,666/1.Biggest Sports Betting Wins Losses
His last bet was on Bayern Munich to triumph over Valencia in the 2001 Champions League final. Bayern ultimately won the match, 5-4 on penalties, which must have been the tensest moment in the Gibbs’ household… ever.Biggest Sports Betting Wins
In the annals of biggest sports betting wins, Mick’s is the undisputed champion.
